Saskatoon Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Saskatoon politics

📅 This Week In Saskatoon: 📅

  • We're hosting a Pints & Politics event, in conjunction with our friends at the Saskatchewan Institute! We're going to keep things simple and just have some casual drinks, with no formal agenda, as an opportunity for everyone to get together with like-minded people, meet some of the team, and chat about politics. There's a lot going on, so there will be plenty of conversation topics. The event takes place on Tuesday, April 21st. It’s free, but you’ll need to RSVP here.

  • The Governance and Priorities Committee will meet on Tuesday at 9:30 am. On the agenda is an appeal of a flag-raising decision. A request by the Hellenic (Greek) community in Saskatoon to raise the Greek flag and proclaim Greek Independence Day was denied under a 2025 policy change that prohibits displaying flags of other countries. The community appealed the decision, arguing the event has long recognized Greek contributions to the city and should continue. Because the appeal process extended beyond the original March 2026 date, the request is now effectively being considered for a future event in 2027.

  • A notice of motion will be brought forward to reverse earlier direction from the Governance and Priorities Committee regarding priority-based budgeting. In May 2025, the Committee had approved implementing a priority-based budgeting tool for the 2027 budget cycle and requested further reporting on how greenhouse gas emissions would be tracked and disclosed alongside program and service spending. However, City Council later voted in March 2026 not to approve the budgeting criteria in principle, creating a policy disconnect. The new motion seeks to formally rescind the earlier Committee decision in light of that Council vote. It also includes the removal of requirements tied to integrating climate-related emissions tracking within the budgeting framework.

  • Saskatchewan is centralizing specialized pediatric surgeries by transferring newborns with complex needs from Regina to Saskatoon. This policy applies to premature and medically complex infants who require specialized procedures. Health officials explain that low case volumes in Regina, typically one to two cases per month, make it challenging for medical providers to maintain necessary skills and safety standards. While the change was requested by local physicians, the opposition NDP argues that transporting critically ill babies could lead to dangerous delays. In response, medical leaders state that transport teams are equipped to move infants safely and emphasize that prenatal planning will prioritize deliveries in Saskatoon. The provincial government maintains that this consolidation ensures high-quality care at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.

  • Saskatoon is receiving a portion of $25.9 million in combined funding from federal, provincial, and municipal governments to enhance essential infrastructure. In Saskatoon, these funds are specifically designated to support the Material Recovery Centre, which is central to the City's goal of diverting 70% of waste from its landfill. City Councillor Jasmin Parker highlighted the urgency of the project, noting that a 2011 report estimated the landfill had only 10 to 15 years of remaining life. This infrastructure work is considered imperative to sustain the city's growth and extend the landfill's viability. Across the participating cities, including Regina and Moose Jaw, the total investment is expected to enable the construction of up to 29,370 new housing units. While officials view this as a necessary step for expansion, critics argue that the funding does not provide immediate relief for record-high housing prices.
