Saskatoon Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Saskatoon politics

📅 This Week In Saskatoon: 📅

  • We're hosting a Pints & Politics event, in conjunction with our friends at the Saskatchewan Institute! We're going to keep things simple and just have some casual drinks, with no formal agenda, as an opportunity for everyone to get together with like-minded people, meet some of the team, and chat about politics. There's a lot going on, so there will be plenty of conversation topics. The event takes place on Tuesday, April 21st. It’s free, but you’ll need to RSVP here.

  • Saskatoon’s Transportation Committee voted 4-2 to approve dedicated bus lanes on First Avenue for the Link transit upgrade. The project, estimated at $7.5 million, will reduce regular traffic lanes and eliminate 61 parking stalls. Councillors Scott Ford and Robert Pearce opposed the measure, citing concerns from local businesses regarding delivery access and economic stability. To improve traffic flow, the City plans to remove a median at Second Avenue and 21st Street. Councillor Bev Dubois acknowledged the difficulty of the transition, and Councillor Randy Donauer facilitated a meeting for the Capitol Music Club to address specific access issues. Officials noted that major parameter changes may no longer be feasible due to secured senior government funding.

  • City Administration and Discover Saskatoon are at odds over how the City should manage its special events funding, as demand for support has far outpaced available resources. The Special Events Reserve holds about $133,900 for 2026, while applications have already exceeded $655,000, prompting discussions about whether to top up the fund or ration existing resources. City officials argue the current system is unsustainable and have proposed options including transferring money from other reserves or allocating limited funds proportionally across applicants, along with potential changes to intake processes. Discover Saskatoon, however, says the City’s approach lacks flexibility and puts the city at a disadvantage when competing for major events, which often require fast, confidential decision-making.

  • A new agreement in Saskatoon gives members of Kakisiwew-Ochapowace Nation free access to City-run recreation facilities for one year, as part of a broader effort framed by municipal officials as advancing reconciliation. The deal was announced by City representatives and Nation leadership and is intended to reduce financial barriers to recreation for families living in the city. It includes access to facilities such as leisure centres, pools, skating rinks, and walking tracks, with an emphasis on supporting health, wellness, and community connection. Both parties described the initiative as the result of ongoing dialogue and collaboration, linking it to broader reconciliation goals and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.

  • The Saskatoon Fringe Festival is raising concerns after being affected by nearby City construction that overlapped with its 2025 event and is expected to again intersect with this year’s festival dates. Organizers say they were not properly notified in advance that major construction along Broadway and nearby streets would take place during the festival’s long-standing July 30th to August 8th schedule. They report significant impacts last year, including reduced attendance, lost vendor spaces, and a major drop in revenue, which they attribute to construction disruptions. City Administration says it is now in direct contact with festival organizers and is working toward a resolution, suggesting the issue may be manageable without a formal report. Council ultimately received the matter for information, while acknowledging concerns about coordination between major civic events and infrastructure projects.
