Saskatoon Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Saskatoon politics

📅 This Week In Saskatoon: 📅

  • This is our 100th edition of Saskatoon Minute, marking 100 weeks of tracking City Council meetings and summarizing key details for residents! This newsletter was created to make local politics accessible, cutting through lengthy reports, jargon, and marathon meetings so more residents can stay informed and hold leaders accountable. We have covered debates on spending, taxes, and City priorities, highlighted good and bad decisions, exposed waste, and shown when core services are neglected. Funded entirely by readers, Common Sense Saskatoon relies on donations to continue its work, so if you appreciate our work to improve City Hall accountability and ensure citizens stay informed, please consider making a donation to keep this newsletter and our other important municipal work going!

  • We're hosting a Pints & Politics event in Saskatoon, in conjunction with our friends at the Saskatchewan Institute! We're going to keep things simple and just have some casual drinks, with no formal agenda, as an opportunity for everyone to get together with like-minded people, meet some of the team, and chat about politics. There's a lot going on, so there will be plenty of conversation topics. The event takes place on Thursday, March 5th at Birmingham’s. It’s free, but you’ll need to RSVP here.

  • On Wednesday, there will be a City Council meeting at 9:30 am. On the agenda is an amendment to the lease terms for 1,748 square feet of vacant space at the Saskatoon Field House, previously approved for use by the University of Saskatchewan’s School of Rehabilitation Science. The amendment removes the City’s right to terminate the lease on six months’ notice, leaving termination rights solely with the University, while still allowing the City to terminate for non-payment of rent, breach of contract, or bankruptcy. This change addresses operational and financial risks for the University, which is investing $749,000 in leasehold improvements, and ensures the lease is commercially reasonable given the scale of investment. The space, vacant since 2016, is intended to complement existing Field House programs, and Administration plans to waive rent and occupancy costs for the initial 10-year term.

  • Council will also consider a new location for the Avenue C South drop-in centre for women experiencing homelessness, marking the facility’s third move since late last year. The current site at 325 Avenue C South raised concerns due to its proximity to the Salvation Army’s men’s shelter, prompting City Councillors and local business representatives to seek a more distributed approach to services. The proposed site at 130 Idylwyld Drive North would offer central, street-level access, transit connectivity, and adaptable spaces. The City plans to fund the $1.635 million property purchase with federal money and use roughly $350,000 from its affordable housing reserve for renovations, including showers, laundry, and fencing.

  • Saskatoon’s 2025 traffic safety report indicates a steady rise in property damage collisions, which have increased every year since 2020. While personal injury collisions saw a slight year-over-year decline to 592, the overall trend remains significantly higher than five years ago. Excessive speed is identified as a primary cause of serious injuries, with dozens of drivers recorded traveling more than 50 km/h over the legal limit. Enforcement activity is concentrated in high-traffic areas like the Central Business District, where police issued nearly 1,000 tickets. Beyond standard traffic violations, the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) intercepted a major illegal tobacco shipment in late 2025, seizing 9.3 million unstamped cigarettes. This single intervention prevented an estimated $4.4 million in tax evasion. Although total enforcement actions have decreased since 2022, specialized units continue to manage both local road safety and overall provincial criminal activity.
