Last Week In Saskatoon:

  • In response to a growing drug crisis in Saskatoon, the Province has activated the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) to coordinate efforts in addressing the overdose surge linked to a dangerous batch of fentanyl-laced drugs. Over 300 overdoses have been reported since late February, and emergency services have needed multiple doses of naloxone to revive individuals. The government has increased the distribution of naloxone kits and emphasized the importance of avoiding illicit substances. Local officials and support organizations are urging residents to stay vigilant and reach out for help if struggling with addiction. The crisis has sparked collaborative efforts between government ministries, health authorities, and local organizations to enhance overdose response and prevention.

  • The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) has launched a warrant enforcement unit to address the city's outstanding criminal code warrants, with around 6,400 warrants currently pending. The unit, consisting of one sergeant and four constables, will focus on executing arrest warrants for individuals who have missed court appearances or have active charges. This initiative, which is a one-year pilot project, aims to enhance community safety by prioritizing the apprehension of high-risk individuals while reducing the burden on frontline patrol officers. The unit will collaborate with other police units to ensure efficient operations.

  • Saskatoon has consolidated seven separate Appeal Boards into a single entity, the Saskatoon Appeal Board, to streamline processes and improve efficiency. Approved by Council in September 2023, the Board is now official. It will oversee appeals related to permits, licenses, property maintenance, Access Transit eligibility, and City mortgage forgiveness. Hearings will take place twice a month, with panels of at least three members from a seven-member Council-appointed Board. The Development Appeals Board and the Board of Revision will continue to function separately.
