Election 2024: Campaign Roundup - Day 12

Welcome to Day 12 of our Saskatoon 2024 Campaign Roundup!
With the 2024 municipal election underway, we'll be bringing you daily updates on all the policy proclamations, platform promises, and political point-scoring from the campaign trail.
As always, our work is entirely funded by donations from residents just like you, so if you appreciate the updates, please consider making a one-off donation or signing up as a supporter for just $10 a month - that's just 36 cents per email!
Campaign Roundup - Day 12:
- Advocates and local leaders in Saskatchewan are urging higher civic engagement. They argue that municipal issues directly impact residents’ daily lives more than other government levels, and greater participation could enhance overall political involvement. We agree! You can sign up to volunteer for Common Sense Saskatoon here.
- Voters have until 6:00 pm to cast a ballot at the drive-thru in the Saskatoon City Hall parking lot off 4th Avenue North.
- Global News profiled the five mayor candidates: Don Atchison, Cynthia Block, Mike Harder, Cary Tarasoff, and Gordon Wyant. Atchison, the former mayor of Saskatoon, emphasizes practical governance, public safety, and fiscal responsibility. Block, the Ward 6 Councillor, focuses on affordable housing, modern transit, and green spaces. Harder is concerned with avoiding property tax hikes, while Tarasoff aims to address homelessness and transit safety. Wyant, a former City Councillor and MLA, brings experience in governance and education.
- In a social media post, mayoral candidate Gordon Wyant questioned the consultation process for several City projects, including the downtown shelter, Fairhaven shelter, downtown arena, downtown library, and Ottawa's Housing Accelerator Fund.
- Mayoral candidate Cynthia Block touted several endorsements, including from Vera Pezer, the Former Chancellor at the University of Saskatchewan, and Judy White, a registered social worker and professor emerita with the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Regina.
